A Code of Ethics

In a 2015 study, the ADA found that 69% of patients were more likely to see a dentist knowing that the ADA had a Code of Ethics.

Below is a quick summary of the ADA Code of Ethics. Whether you are a dental student or a practicing dentist it is always worth the time to refresh yourself on an important part of what it means to be a dentist.

Principle 1–Patient Autonomy:

  • Dentists have the duty to respect the patient’s right to self determination and confidentiality
  • Inform the patient of proposed treatment and possible alternatives
  • Safeguard the confidentiality of records

Principle 2–Non-Maleficence: “Do No Harm”

  • Keep up with current knowledge and skills
  • Know your own limitations and know when to refer
  • Boundary issues: doctor-patient relationships social or financial

*Remember: all the state dental boards are related to each other electronically

Principle 3–Beneficence: “Do Good”

  • Be leaders in the community
  • Dentists are encouraged to use skills and knowledge for the benefit of the public
  • Conduct yourself to bring esteem to the profession

Principle 4–Justice/Fairness

  • Duty to be fair in dealings with patients
  • Deliver care without prejudice, emergency care
  • Actively seek allies in the community

Principle 5–Veracity

  • Dentists shall not represent care or fees in false in a misleading manner
  • Rebates, Split fees and “kickbacks” are absolutely prohibited under Federal “Stark Laws”
